Direct Access Information
DIRECT ACCESS LAW-No Prescription Needed for Physical Therapy in Illinois for most patients.
In August 2018 Governor Bruce Rauner signed the Direct Access Law.
The law states that many patients in Illinois no longer need a prescription from a physician to get insurance approval for physical therapy. You may be able to go directly to a physical therapist at Brightmore PT (or any other licensed PT) in Illinois.
Direct Access may be applied to patients in Illinois with the following health plans: United Healthcare, Aetna, BCBS, and some Cigna plans and others. Medicare patients can be seen for an evaluation, which we will forward to your doctor for review and signature.
This means you can be seen for physical therapy at our office without scheduling an office visit with your doctor prior to your physical therapy evaluation. Please call our office for details and to schedule an appointment.
Limitations remain for some healthcare policies.
· Union healthcare policies require a signed prescription for care.
· BPT will not see worker’s compensation or auto injury patients without a prescription.
Patient healthcare policy specifics remain unchanged re: deductible, co-insurance, plan maximum visits, etc. Call your health insurance company regarding your plan requirements in Illinois, as each plan is different.
Please note that the law requires physical therapists to report Direct Access visits to a healthcare professional within 30 business days of the initial session.
The patient will also be referred to a doctor under certain specific circumstances.
